51 Shakti Peeth

Sacred Shakti Peethas have been established throughout the Indian subcontinent. The 51 pilgrimage sites are described in the Devi Purana. Whereas Devi Bhagwat describes 108 Shaktipeeths and Goddess Gita describes 72 Shaktipeeths, Tantra Chudamani describes 52 Shaktipeeths. In Devi Purana, only 51 Shaktipeeths are mentioned. Some of these 51 Shaktipeeths can also be found in other countries. There are currently 42 Shakti Peethas in India, one in Pakistan, four in Bangladesh, one in Sri Lanka, one in Tibet, and two in Nepal.

Mythology is prevalent in the context of the formation of Goddess Mata’s 51 Shaktipeeths. Mata Jagadambika, the daughter of King Prajapati Daksha, was born as Sati and married Lord Shiva. A yajna was once organised by a group of sages. The Yagya was attended by all of the deities. When King Daksha arrived, everyone stood up except Lord Shiva. Daksha’s son-in-law was Lord Shiva. When King Daksha saw this, he became enraged. Sati’s father, King Prajapati Daksha, had organised a yagya to avenge this insult. Brahma, Vishnu, Indra, and other gods and goddesses were invited to that yajna, but Lord Shiva, Sati’s husband, was not invited.

This Yagya was not attended by Lord Shiva. Sati learned from Narada that a yagya was being held at her father’s home, but she was not invited. She became enraged when she realised this. Narada advised him that he did not need to invite him to his father’s home. Lord Shiva explained to Sati why she was going to her father’s house, but she refused to go.

Sati went to join the yagya despite Shankarji’s refusal to stop. Sati confronted her father, Daksha, at the sacrificial site, and demanded to know why he had not invited Shankar. Daksha then began making disparaging remarks about Lord Shankar in front of Sati. Sati, who was humiliated, sacrificed her life by jumping into the yagya-kund.

When Lord Shankar learned about it, his third eye erupted in rage. There was devastation and outrage everywhere. Veerabhadra beheaded Daksha and punished other deities on Lord Shankar’s orders for listening to Shiva’s condemnation. Lord Shiva drew Sati’s body from the Yagyakund, lifted it onto his shoulder, and began travelling across the globe in grief.

Bhagwati Sati appeared to Shiva in space and told him that wherever the parts of his body fell apart, the Mahashaktipeeth would rise. Taking Sati’s dead body, Shiva began performing the Tandava dance while roaming the earth, causing a disaster to erupt on the planet.

When the three worlds, including the earth, were disrupted, Lord Vishnu used the Sudarshan Chakra to shatter Sati’s body and drop it to the earth. Vishnu would cut off any part of Sati’s body with his chakra and drop its pieces on the earth whenever Shiva slammed his feet in a dance posture. According to ‘Tantra-Chudamani,’ wherever the pieces of Sati’s part, clothes, or ornaments while wearing it fell, Shaktipeeth appeared. Mother’s Shaktipeeths were thus built in a total of 51 locations. Sati was born as Parvati in the house of the Snow King in the next life, and after performing severe penance, she reclaimed Shiva as her husband.
